Multidisciplinary Research Unit 7
ISTÓS Research Unit supports a continuum interdisciplinary innovative research and activities in the scientific fields of History, Archaeology and Heritage Management. It also aims to provide a toolkit of transferable research and analytical skills towards bridging theory and practice, creating and expanding networks of scholars/researchers, practitioners and institutions, and contributing to research and teaching collaborations across countries and disciplines. This is achieved in close collaboration with the MA Hellenic Studies (18 Months/90 ECTS, Master of Arts), E-Learning: History, Archaeology and Art, Heritage Management of the European University Cyprus.

Description
This research project aims at providing a better understanding of the process of the construction of royal ideology and the exercise of power in the various territories of the Ptolemaic kingdom located in the eastern Mediterranean: Egypt, Cyprus, Cyrenaica, southern Syria. Through in-depth case studies, the aim will be to reflect on the notion “external possessions”, commonly implicated to qualify the territories administrated by the Ptolemies outside Egypt, an approach which does not necessarily take into consideration the specificity of the relationship between each one of these regions and Alexandria. Special attention will be given to institutional, social, and cultural transformations within the regions concerned. The project will be developed in three phases. The first Workshop, entitled External possessions or affairs of the King? The case of Cyprus and Cyrenaica, will take place in 2022 (European University Cyprus, Nicosia, 20-22/5), bringing together specialists on Cyprus, Cyrenaica and Egypt. The objective is to rethink and re-evaluate the position of these two regions within the Ptolemaic kingdom and the wider Mediterranean area. A second workshop will take place in 2023, again in Cyprus and the project will be completed at the end of 2024 with the organization of the International Conference, Les espaces lagides en Méditerranée orientale.
