Georgios Papaioannou

Assoc. Prof. Georgios Papaioannou is an expert in heritage management, archaeology, and museum studies. He has studied and trained in Greece, Spain, the UK and the USA. He is currently an Associate Professor in Museology and Digital Cultural Heritage, and the Director of the Museology Research Laboratory, at the Ionian University, Greece. He is also an Adjunct Professor of the European University of Cyprus. He has taught at universities in Greece, UK, USA, Australia, France, Cyprus, Jordan and Qatar for more than two decades. His recent research lies on applications of digital technologies for heritage and GLAM institutions and on museum archaeology. He has introduced the International Conferences on Museum Big Data, started in 2019. He has directed numerous internationally funded research projects of heritage/museum works in the Mediterranean and the Arab world (Greece, Cyprus, Syria, Jordan, Oman, Qatar), including Interreg, IPA and Erasmus+ projects, and he has founded and organized museums and exhibitions worldwide, e.g. the Museum at the Lowest Place on Earth in the Dead Sea, Jordan. He has authored books, papers and conference presentations on archaeology, heritage and digital heritage topics. He is a Member of the EUROPEANA Network Association, Member of the Pool of Experts of the European Museum Academy, Member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), Secretary General of the Hellenic Studies Society of Near East (HSNES), and Senior Fellow and Assessor of the Higher Education Academy (UK).
